If you have an FSA (Flexible Spending Account) through your employer, then you must spend any remaining money in the account by December 31 or risk losing it! Taking care of your family’s dental health is an excellent way to utilize the remaining money in your FSA and maximize the benefits of your insurance policy. Here are some important things to consider when planning how to use your FSA dollars for dental care:
Deductibles and Maximum Dollars
Many dental plans have deductibles that must be met, as well as an annual maximum dollar amount that the plan will pay during the benefit period (usually January through December). If you have satisfied the deductible, but have not reached the maximum benefit amount, these unused benefits do not roll over. You could lose out on hundreds of dollars of services!
Determine what your family needs
- Dental sealants –
Children should get sealants on their permanent molars before decay has a chance to attack. If your child has untreated molars, this is the perfect opportunity to make sure they are protected.
- Additional Cleanings –
Most patients have their teeth cleaned twice a year. However, some patients, such as those with braces, may benefit from an extra cleaning.
- Unfinished Dental Work –
If you have put off replacing a dental crown or other procedure, now is an ideal time to have it completed.
- Dental Implants / Dentures –
Many dental insurance plans only pay for part of these procedures and leave the patient with a significant uncovered expense. If you have money left in your FSA, it can help cover your out-of-pocket cost.
- Nightguard, or Occlusal Guard –
Excessive grinding and nighttime clenching can cause numerous dental and health problems. If nightguards are not covered by your plan, you can use your FSA money to help pay for this dental appliance.
